Could your old carpet be hiding a hidden treasure?
During lockdown we have seen a growth in the number of people contacting us after finding under an old carpet, beautiful, if slightly damaged or dirty, original and valuable parquet flooring.
The questions we have mostly been asked are, ‘how to restore parquet flooring’, ‘what the cost of parquet flooring restoration cost is’ and ‘how to restore parquet flooring without sanding’.
In this blog we hope to give insight into how we recommend you restore your wooden floors to their natural beauty.
To begin with we start every restoration with an inspection of the floor. Some floors have been covered up for many years and as a result can develop loose blocks and damage from adhesive rods and tapes.
We will talk to our clients about the ideal finish for the parquet flooring, from the desired end finish to how to manage the maintenance post restoration.
At this stage, we take into account the coating required to finish the floor to the highest desired specification.
As part of our restoring parquet flooring tips and service we can also offer a test patch of our coatings to choose from before we arrive.
Once we arrive on site, our first step is to fix loose blocks and identify any other problems and fix them.
We then start to sand the floor, this is an essential part of the process in order to get the perfect floor finish!
Restoring parquet flooring without sanding is not something we recommend, we realise this question is asked as people worry about mess and dust, the process we use though, we are proud to say is 98% dustless!
We begin with low grit abrasives to remove the previous finish and any damage where possible, this in some circumstances will level the floor too as some blocks can rise over time.
Over time, parquet blocks can move due to natural expansion of the wood also because of old bitumen adhesives breaking down, to solve this, we always recommend having the floor filled, this is all taken into account when we quote our parquet floor restoration cost.
We fill the floor, using a technique of using the dust we save from the floor, mixing it with a filler to cover all those gaps and holes, leaving the floor smooth and easy to maintain.
Using the dust is is a great colour match technique for the floor and it’s more eco-friendly as we are reusing what most people would throw away.
The next stage of how we restore parquet wood floors sees further use of abrasives. We move up through the grit level to achieve the desired outcome for the coating that has been chosen.

Last but by no means least is the really satisfying bit, applying the coatings.
Every coating is slightly different to apply, and they are some of the best products on the market. We have a range of lacquers, oils, and stains to choose from, ensuring your parquet floor restoration is perfect for years to come.
In conclusion, whatever your floor, we can restore, and we really love parquet floors!
