Regardless of whether you’ve had your beautiful wood floors for a day or for 5 years, you don’t want to end up with wood floor damage from your furniture.
Wood flooring is great as it can stand the test of time, whilst also being able to be restored. But you still need to be careful when it comes to your heavy furniture.
Will heavy furniture damage wood floors? The short answer is, yes. We will be explaining how to prevent any damage to your wooden floors below.
Don’t Drag Your Furniture
Dragging any type of furniture, be it a sofa, chair, or drawers, will cause friction or scratches to the floorboards.
It can be very common for people to drag furniture, so make sure to take the time to lift it when moving from place to place.
Even when pulling or pushing your chair out, make sure to lift instead of dragging.
Even if it doesn’t scratch the floor, it can still wear down the sealant, which will shorten the life of the floor.
Prevent Uneven Weight Distribution
Furniture with uneven weight distribution will cause damaged boards, particularly heavy pieces of furniture.
Use Protective Mats
To stop any major or minor scratches and damaged areas, we recommend using protective mats, especially for any furniture with wheels, such as an office chair.
This prevents the wheels from constantly scratching your wood floors and removes the need to get your floors sanded and restored.
Use Furniture Pads
For furniture such as sofas, armchairs, or dining tables, furniture pads can be placed under each leg.
Protective pads give soft protective padding between the furniture leg and floor, preventing any unnecessary damage. It also helps chairs glide more easily when pulling or pushing them out.
It also helps if you can’t lift pieces of heavy furniture. We don’t recommend dragging, however, if you put the correct procedures in place, such as pads or placing it on a piece of cloth, then it will glide easier over the floor.
