The Different Finishes for Wooden Floors – What Are They?

In this blog, we will explore some of the most common finishes for wooden floors so that you can decide on the best for your flooring.

Whilst most new wooden floors come pre-finished to give them a range of looks, we can often re-finish floors with the same range.

Finishes for Wooden Floors

Matte Finish:

Matte finishes are loved for their durability and ease of maintenance.

Many people are concerned about years of wear and tear building up on their beautiful hardwood flooring. A matte finish can help to reduce the impact thanks to its highly durable finish quality.

Visually, matte finishes are virtually invisible as they don’t tend to reflect much light. This allows the wood’s natural grain to shine through, which many people enjoy the look of.

Semi-Gloss Finish:

Semi-gloss is a wood flooring finish that most consider the halfway point between matte and gloss.

It’s great for brightening up space but doesn’t require as much maintenance as a high gloss floor. Due to this, many people who don’t mind their wooden floor looking 100% natural enjoy this finish.

Gloss:

Gloss finishes are few and far between nowadays. Almost all prefinished floors are matte or ultra-matte.

While we are able to offer a gloss finish. The maintenance of such a shiny surface often out way the practical needs of the floor.

What’s the difference between a lacquered finish and an oiled finish?

The two main types of finishes for wooden floors are lacquered and oiled.

A lacquered finish is a clear or coloured varnish that produces a hardwearing and durable finish. Whilst it does provide an added layer of protection to your flooring, the lacquer will wear down over time, requiring re-sanding and re-finishing to bring it back to its original condition.

On the other hand, oiled finishes are applied much like wax. They sink deep into the wood’s pores, providing surface protection and extra moisture resistance. They do require re-oiling periodically but, in the long run, should require fewer significant repairs.
