Maintaining Your Solid Wood Floor

A solid wood floor is a wise investment for your house because it will maintain its eye-catching excellent looks for many years to come.

Once you have solid wood floors placed, you won’t need to consider replacing them for a very long time if they are properly kept; they can last for tens of years.

Accidents can, however, occur, and if your solid wood floors are starting to appear a little worn out, you might be debating whether to repair or replace them.

We have put together a guide for the upkeep and care of your solid wood floor to assist you in making your decision.

What maintenance is required for your hardwood floor?

What kind of maintenance your floor needs is the first thing you must address.

This may involve resurfacing, refinishing, or even adding fresh stains and varnishes.

Should I replace or fix scratches on a solid wood floor?

Regardless of the wood, scuffs will eventually appear. Depending on the severity of the damage, we would advise restoring the damage, with a professional, before looking at the expense of replacing them.

To accomplish this, sand all of the rooms boards to the level of the specified bands, then repaint and varnish the floor to give it a brand-new appearance in a matter of days.

However, this can be a very tricky job, and if not done right, can make your floors worse! We always recommend calling specialists, like Sussex Floor Restoration!

Should I fill or fix a scratch?

Unfortunately, scratches are a frequent occurance on solid wood floors and can be brought on by wearing heels, pets, dust, and general wear and tear.

Your floor should only need to be sanded and refinished if the scratches are minor. However, if the scratches are more like gouges, it might be best to replace the boards entirely because sanding a deep scrape might cause you to remove too much of the board, leaving an uneven surface.

Should I replace dents or repair them?

Footwear, bulky furniture, or dropping large objects onto your wooden floor can all cause dents.

Since a dent is only a compression of the wood, it can possibly be repaired by wetting the area where the mark is, covering it with cloth, and then gently ironing over it.

However, this only applies to tiny dents; if your dent is extremely large, your only choice may be to sand it out.

If the dent cannot be covered and is too deep to be sanded out, you will need to consider replacing the boards.

Do I need to replace or repair water damage?

One of the worst types of damage to a solid wooden floor is water damage.

You will need a professional to look at water damage to a floor, as usually the boards will need replacing or a professional to restore them.

No matter how lovely and durable your wood flooring is, it will undoubtedly get a little worn over time. Once enough years have gone by, it’s quite usual for hardwood floors to develop minor scratches, significant gouges, scuffs, and dents.

However, all of these damages can be repaired with good resurfacing work.
