If you’re considering replacing your flooring, and want to look at sustainable flooring options, then you may have asked the question: is hardwood flooring sustainable?
Choosing a sustainable flooring option doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice the look or style of your home. Hardwood flooring is a sustainable option and also gives you the option of many different ‘vibes’.
In this blog, we will be discussing 4 reasons why hardwood flooring is sustainable, and a great option to choose for your home.
-
Long-lasting and durable
Hardwood flooring is known for its ability to be long-lasting with the right care and maintenance. Wood floors can last up to 100 years when looked after properly and refinished when needed.
Alternatively, linoleum and Marmoleum flooring can last up to 40 years if well-maintained, so wood flooring is the better option if you want something that can last a lifetime!
Wood flooring is usually a little more expensive upfront than carpet or linoleum, but it will be a cheaper option in the long run, as carpet only lasts 5-15 years and linoleum around 40 years.
With wood flooring, if you decided you wanted something lighter or darker, then you can do this too! Sanding and restaining is a lot quicker, and more environmentally friendly than ripping up a carpet or linoleum flooring and having it replaced.
-
Can be sanded and refinished
If you have a busy household, with children and/or pets, and lots of foot traffic, wood flooring can get quite the beating. However, fear not! Wood flooring can be sanded and refinished, meaning all the scratches and dents will be removed.
Unlike getting stains on the carpet, and having to replace it, wood flooring can be refinished within a day. Sussex Floor Restoration has 98% dustless sanding and 5-star ratings from our customers. Get in touch with us today for our showroom, or our sanding and restoration services.
-
Harvested sustainably
Wood is a renewable source that is carefully regulated by the government to ensure it is harvested sustainably and responsibly.
It is not as harmful to the environment as many people think, as for every cubic foot of trees that are cut down, 1.66 cubic feet are planted back.
The current supply of hardwood trees will last for at least the next 100 years, giving newly planted trees plenty of time to mature.
In line with the FSC standards, everything we supply is either from a sustainable source or is a maintainable product meaning that not only are they making a low impact on the environment, but almost all of our products can be refinished which means much less waste and hassle in the years to come.
-
Less waste when manufacturing
The production of floor coverings can create a lot of waste, which can be damaging to the environment and costly.
Wood and stone require less energy and chemicals to produce than carpet, linoleum and tiles, but wood has an added benefit of very little waste.
Sawdust and wood chips can be used to make paper and other products, while excess wood can be burned for carbon neutral bio-energy. Through these enivornmentally friendly waste management solutions, wood producers are able to use all of each tree harvested.
Why Choose Sussex Sustainable Flooring
Sussex Sustainable Flooring is a new showroom with the ethos that flooring should not just come from a sustainable source, but also have the ability to be refinished, thus reducing waste and cost.
Too many times we have come across floors that we could not save, and the alternatives were either made from plastic or a non-restorable product. We hate throwing things away, especially when things could be restored!
