Is Linoleum Sustainable? 4 Reasons Why It Is.

It may come as a surprise to know that linoleum is considered to be a sustainable eco-friendly flooring product!

Linoleum is not to be confused with vinyl flooring, which is generally constructed from non-biodegradable plastic polyvinyl chloride (PVC), and is not environmentally friendly and often incorrectly called linoleum or lino.

In fact, linoleum is the complete opposite of vinyl. Although they may look similar, they are made from different raw materials, vinyl from synthetic materials, and linoleum from natural materials.

Linoleum flooring is an environmentally friendly alternative to PVC as it is a renewable and natural biodegradable flooring option.

What is linoleum made from?

Linoleum is made from a mixture of natural materials including linseed oil, cork dust, pine resin, sawdust and mineral fillers such as ground limestone. Pigments are also added to create different colour finishes, including wood colouring. It can come as a roll or in tile or plank form to mimic the look of wood.

1. Natural benefits

As linoleum is made from naturally based products, there are no nasty toxins released into the air meaning it has no impact on the indoor air quality. Perfect for a sustainable, natural and healthy home environment.

2. Water-resistant

Being resistant to water, linoleum is a practical hard wearing flooring choice to install in wet areas of the home. Perfect for the kitchen and bathroom where water is easily spilt, or it is the perfect floor covering for those who like to splash in the bath!

3. Fire retardant

As linoleum is constructed of natural materials, it is designed to not release any vapours that are liable to catch fire and not only does linoleum resist igniting, it also stops burning very quickly when the fire source is removed. Perfect for a sustainable safe home.

4. Durable and long-lasting

Linoleum is a durable and long-lasting floor, which means you can keep your floor for longer, reducing the impact on the environment and lessening the need to spend money on any costly flooring replacement.

Maintaining and restoring linoleum

It may also come as a surprise that linoleum can be restored. At Sussex Floor Restoration, we are passionate about maintaining and restoring rather than replacing flooring.

Always thinking about reducing the impact on the environment.

Linoleum is easy to maintain by dusting and mopping regularly. A deep clean should also be carried out annually to ensure your linoleum floor remains in top condition.

Why Choose Sussex Sustainable Flooring

Sussex Sustainable Flooring is a new showroom with the ethos that flooring should not just come from a sustainable source, but also have the ability to be refinished, thus reducing waste and cost.

Too many times we have come across floors that we could not save, and the alternatives were either made from plastic or a non-restorable product. We hate throwing things away, especially when things could be restored!
