Our Guide On How To Clean Wooden Floorboards

In this blog, we will provide you with valuable insights on how to effectively clean wooden floorboards and care for them.

If you have a beautiful wooden floor in your home or commercial space it’s important that it is well maintained to both protect the surface and the longevity of the flooring.

We at Sussex Floor Restoration understand the significance of preserving and reviving a wooden floor. We firmly believe in sustainable flooring that can be refinished and restored which brings added cost-saving benefits to your pocket and also helps to prevent unnecessary waste from going to landfill.

Cleaning your flooring is part of this preservation and in this blog, we will provide you with valuable insights on how to effectively clean and care for your wooden floorboards to ensure they last a long time.

Why Cleaning Wooden Floorboards Matters

Preserving the Aesthetic Appeal:

Clean wooden floorboards enhance the overall aesthetic of any space, be it a residential or commercial property. Regular cleaning ensures that your floors remain visually appealing and presentable, leaving a positive impression on visitors and customers. Vital in a  commercial space such as a restaurant where hygiene is of the utmost importance.

Extending the Lifespan:

Proper cleaning and maintenance significantly extend the lifespan of wooden floorboards. Removing dirt, dust, and other debris, helps to prevent scratching your floors which could cause long-term damage which may then involve costly repairs or complete floorboard replacements. A bit of effort goes a long way!

Step-by-Step Guide: How to Clean Wooden Floorboards

Prepare With The Following Equipment:

  • Broom with soft bristles or a brush attachment from a vacuum cleaner
  • Mop, can be a microfibre mop
  • PALLMANN CLEAN & GO system (we are Parkett Profi accredited floor technicians)
  • Clean, dry cloth or mop for drying

Clear the Floor:

Take out as much furniture, rugs, and other objects as possible to make a spacious working area. This step prevents potential damage to both the floorboards and the items themselves.

Dry Cleaning:

Use the soft-bristle broom or a brush attachment from your vacuum cleaner to remove loose dirt, dust, and debris. Don’t forget those hard-to-reach areas such as any corners or crevices.

Damp Mopping:

Dilute PALLMANN CLEAN at a dilution ratio of 50 parts warm water to 1 part CLEAN, using a damp, well-wrung out mop. Ensure it is well-wrung and not excessively wet. Excess moisture can seep into the wood and cause damage.

Mopping Technique:

Using the damp mop, gently clean the wooden floorboards, working in small sections. Follow the grain of the wood to avoid leaving streaks or marks. Rinse the mop frequently and change the cleaning solution as needed.

The mop head should be changed when necessary to avoid re-contamination of the floor.

It is vital that water is not allowed to remain on the floor for more than 1 minute.

Work quickly and systematically cutting in the edges of each area and then the main body of the area.

Spot Cleaning:

For stubborn stains or marks, apply a small amount of the wood floor cleaner directly to a clean, dry cloth. Gently rub the affected area in a circular motion, taking care not to apply excessive pressure that may damage the floorboards. Wipe away any residue with a damp cloth and dry the area thoroughly.

Drying:

After completing the cleaning process, allow the floorboards to air dry naturally. You can speed up the drying process by using a clean, dry cloth or mop to remove any excess moisture.

Finishing Touch:

Once the floorboards are completely dry, you may consider applying a suitable wood floor polish or a protective sealant. This helps to restore shine, provides an extra layer of protection, and helps to maintain the lifespan of the wood.

If the floor needs a further coat of PALLMANN MAGIC OIL, this is best applied by Sussex Floor Restoration.

Please note, it is best to avoid using a steam cleaner as the moisture from the steam can cause the wooden floor to swell which then cause damage to the flooring.
